What does it take to keep fishing alive and sustainable today? On 23 July 2026, the 4helixAquaCultureNet project brought this question to Porto Cesareo, hosting a networking event at Cooperativa Pescatori dello Jonio. Facilitated by Legacoop Puglia, the meeting opened a direct dialogue with the local fishing community, exploring current challenges and future opportunities.
Participants discussed the growing difficulties faced by the sector, including fewer working days at sea, limited generational renewal and administrative barriers. At the same time, the exchange highlighted the value of professional skills, maritime culture and local knowledge as key resources for developing new services, projects and employment opportunities.
These insights will feed into the 4helix Cross-border Aquaculture Network and the future e-Aquaculture Hub, connecting businesses, research organisations, public institutions and coastal communities.
The takeaway is clear: meaningful cross-border innovation starts from real local needs.
