After the kick‑off meeting held on 13–14 January 2026 in Monte Sant’Angelo, GreenSentinel — Integrative Biodiversity and Pollution Sentinels has entered its operational phase.
GreenSentinel aims to protect Mediterranean biodiversity by building a community-driven environmental monitoring network. The Italian–Greek partnership includes Gargano National Park (Lead Partner), GOEL, Comunità Progetto Sud, the Municipality of Aigialeia, and the Municipality of Sami and is now focusing on activities implementation. A first draft of the technical document for the Citizen Science app will be soon ready. It is a GIS-based open-data platform, and will field-test an innovative system to detect atmospheric pollutants and BVOCs as bioindicators. The app is intended for wide public use as a citizen‑science tool to engage local communities and enable residents to act as sentinels of biodiversity by submitting observations and taking part in monitoring activities. Field activities will include local meetings and awareness campaigns through June 2027.
The next operational milestone is the six‑monthly partner meeting in Sami (Greece) on 9–11 June 2026, where partners will present their progress and agree on the schedule of upcoming activities.
