The BIOCHAIN project officially launched on 8–9 October in Ioannina, with the Region of Epirus hosting the two-day kick-off meeting as Lead Partner. The project brings together partners from Greece and Italy to advance the sustainable use, conservation, and market integration of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) and Non-Wood Forest Products (NWFPs), addressing shared regional challenges linked to biodiversity loss, climate change, and pressures on the agricultural, apicultural, and marine sectors.
The first day, held at the ICHCVT “Stavros Niarchos”, included presentations of the partners and an overview of the project’s activities, including activities related to the preservation and sustainable use of MAPs and NWFPs, thematic studies, training courses, workshops, educational material, and the development of an AI-based data platform. Ms. Maristella Mantuano and Ms. Anca Simion, representing the Joint Secretariat and Managing Authority, joined the meeting online and provided guidance on procedures, obligations, and key steps required for smooth project implementation.
On the second day, the meeting moved to the University of Ioannina – Department of Chemistry (“K2” Building, F2-145 Hall), where partners conducted a field visit to the faculty’s laboratories. Discussions focused on recapping the first day, coordinating upcoming phases, and planning the practical organization of activities across the participating partners.
The kick-off meeting set a constructive foundation for collaboration, ensuring a shared understanding and joint commitment to BIOCHAIN’s goals: fostering a sustainable bio-economy, strengthening local SMEs and producers, and promoting biodiversity conservation through innovative, cross-border solutions.
