Keeping traditional knowledge alive means turning heritage into an opportunity for the future. This was the focus of the M.A.R.K.A.T.O. Info Day, held on 24 June 2026 at the Metsovo Interdisciplinary Research Center of NTUA, bringing together residents, artisans, researchers and local stakeholders.
Organised by the Municipality of Metsovo with MIRC–NTUA and ComiTech, the event highlighted Metsovo’s traditional occupations as living cultural heritage. Through filmed portraits and testimonies from local craftspeople, participants explored practices such as saddle-making, carpentry, woodcarving, cooperage, beehive making and weaving.
The discussion focused on how these skills can preserve their authenticity while contributing to local identity, sustainable development and cultural tourism. Research findings, UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage framework and the Local Tourism Masterplan were also presented.
The next steps of M.A.R.K.A.T.O. will include workshops, exchanges, digital activities, a local festival and the development of a tourism plan, turning traditional knowledge into new opportunities for local communities.
