Habitats and Birds Directives and the Natura 2000 Network explained in the schools. As part of the NATURES awareness campaign on species and habitats, the Sila National Park carried out two educational and awareness-raising meetings with students in San Giovanni in Fiore (Cosenza).
The activities took place on 29 May 2026 at the “Leonardo da Vinci” Institute and on 3 June 2026 at the “L.S. – ISA – IPSIA” Institute, involving a total of 145 students and 6 teachers.
The meetings aimed to strengthen young people’s knowledge of biodiversity, environmental sustainability and the conservation of natural heritage. During the sessions, students explored key European instruments for nature protection, with a focus on the Habitats and Birds Directives and the Natura 2000 Network.
The activities also highlighted the ecological value of the Sila National Park and the UNESCO MAB Sila Biosphere Reserve, with particular attention to Lutra lutra, the Eurasian otter, a target species of the project in the Park area.
By combining environmental education with practical examples of responsible behaviour, the initiative encouraged students to reflect on their active role in protecting habitats, species and ecosystems, strengthening the link between local communities and biodiversity conservation.
