The BREATH Project, under the lead of the Hellenic Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, is implemented in cooperation with the Region of Western Greece, the Region of Ionian Islands (Greece), the Region of Epirus (Greece), Information Society S.A. (Greece), the Region of Basilicata (Italy), the Region of Calabria (Italy) and the Region of Puglia (Italy). The partnership addresses common climate and environmental risks in the Ionian–Adriatic area.
Through pilot infrastructure works, enhanced monitoring systems and stronger civil protection networks, BREATH improves preparedness for floods, wildfires, coastal erosion and potential tsunami events.
Key actions include anti-flood works in the Region of Ionian Islands, an advanced monitoring hub in the Region of Epirus, innovative alert systems in Calabria and Basilicata, a multifunctional civil protection hub in Puglia, improved coastal surveillance in Western Greece and early warning systems for fire prevention across Greek regions.
These investments improve early warning capacity, reduce possible environmental damage and protect communities. The project also emphasizes capacity building, awareness-raising, volunteerism and cross-border cooperation. Training programs and public campaigns enhance the skills of civil protection personnel, local authorities and volunteers, ensuring faster and better coordinated emergency responses.
By sharing resources, knowledge and best practices, BREATH enhances resilience across maritime borders. BREATH activities are also aligned with EU priorities on sustainability and climate adaptation, contributing to a safer and more resilient Ionian–Adriatic region prepared for future environmental challenges.
