GreenSentinel starts from a simple truth: the Mediterranean is one of the planet’s great biodiversity treasures, but it is under severe pressure. Pollution, climate change, and habitat loss are eroding its unique ecosystems, threatening not only plants and animals, but also the communities that depend on them. In Italy’s Gargano Park and in the Greek regions of Aigialeia and Sami, these challenges are felt every day.
GreenSentinel’s mission is to turn the tide by combining innovation and participation. The project will track the health of ecosystems through an integrated monitoring system that brings together biodiversity data, pollution levels, and climate indicators. By analyzing natural plant emissions as “early warning signals,” it creates a smarter way to detect environmental stress before it becomes irreversible.
At the same time, GreenSentinel places people at the heart of conservation. With a Citizen Science App, residents, schools, and volunteers will become “Biodiversity Sentinels,” gathering real data and contributing to a Cross-Border Open Data Platform that connects Italy and Greece. This shared resource will support scientists, policymakers, and citizens in making better-informed decisions for nature.
Beyond the tools, the project delivers a Joint Biodiversity Strategy for cross-border parks, aligning policies and practices across both countries. Community events, BioLabs, and Pride initiatives will spread awareness and inspire new generations to care for their environment.
The impact is clear: stronger knowledge, stronger communities, and stronger policies. GreenSentinel ensures that biodiversity protection is not just about preserving landscapes, but about building a shared culture of responsibility and resilience that lasts well beyond the project itself.
