HERITAGE LINKS – Cross Border World Heritage Itineraries

Acronym: HERITAGE LINKS

Category:
Ordinary

Project Summary

Heritage Links (HL) is a cross-border initiative that celebrates the shared cultural heritage of Greece and Italy, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Epirus, the Ionian Islands, Basilicata, and Calabria. It promotes sustainable tourism, cultural exchange, and local economic growth.

These regions possess outstanding cultural treasures but face common challenges such as fragmented heritage management, climate impacts, and over-tourism. HL unites them to develop balanced strategies for tourism and heritage conservation.

Through the World Heritage Cultural Route (WHCR), HL connects UNESCO sites and key cultural destinations to distribute visitors more evenly, protect sensitive areas, and highlight lesser known yet valuable sites.

To enhance accessibility and visitor engagement, HL applies digital technologies such as Virtual and Augmented Reality, 3D printing, and interactive platforms, offering inclusive experiences for all, including people with disabilities.

Its actions include joint management plans, restoration projects (e.g. the Holy Monastery of Prophet Elias in Epirus and the St. Catherine complex in Corfu), Braille signage, 3D reproductions, cultural events, and the “Cultural Ambassadors” initiative.

HL’s mission is to safeguard cultural heritage through sustainable management, strengthen cross-border cooperation, foster innovation, and ensure that tourism benefits local communities throughout the year.
