The HERITAGE LINKS project officially launched on 27–28 November 2025 in Ioannina, with the Region of Epirus hosting the two-day kick-off meeting as Lead Partner. The project brings together partners from Greece and Italy to promote sustainable and responsible tourism through the preservation, enhancement, and digital innovation of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, addressing shared regional challenges linked to overtourism, climate change, and the management of cultural heritage.
The first day, held at the headquarters of the Region of Epirus, included presentations of the participating bodies and an overview of the project’s actions, including infrastructure interventions, digital applications, 3D reproductions of monuments, training activities, cross-border exchanges of know-how, and community engagement events. Ms. Maristella Mantuano and Ms. Elena Giannopoulou, representing the Joint Secretariat and Managing Authority, joined the meeting online and provided guidance on procedures, obligations, and key steps required for smooth project implementation.
On the second day, the meeting included a presentation by Development Agency of Epirus SA focusing on the Zagori area, followed by discussions among partners to coordinate upcoming activities, plan the practical organization of tasks, and strengthen cross-border cooperation.
The kick-off meeting established a strong foundation for collaboration, ensuring a shared understanding and joint commitment to HERITAGE LINKS’ goals: enhancing cultural heritage preservation, fostering sustainable tourism, integrating innovative digital technologies, and engaging local communities in the protection and promotion of their cultural assets.
